This part of our business is extremely personal for us and our families. In June of 2013, our friend, partner and co-founder, David R. Breuer, died tragically while on vacation with his family. Dave’s premature and unexpected death was a devastating blow to all of us emotionally. However, despite the loss of Dave’s presence and overall contribution to the Guidance team, our organization was able to continue. This is because we had plans and processes in place in preparation for certain contingencies, which included the death of one or more partners and/or key staff. That same planning and those same processes are repeatable and deliverable to our clients, along with the practical information we have learned as a result of personally going through those processes.
For our clients who are also business owners, we often hear that they feel inadequately prepared for such events, and would like help in walking them through the process. Likewise, having a plan for your children to inherit your business may seem comparatively simple, but may also provide them with multiple unexpected legal and tax liabilities which can cripple a business and ultimately undo the legacy you want to provide for your family. Therefore, in addition to our financial and tax advisory services, we also have multiple outside resources who can provide accounting and legal advice which may be necessary to design an appropriate and effective plan for both business continuation and business succession.
